About Exercise, Pilates, and Balance Balls

We have all seen the over-sized Pilate’s balls on infomercials. They are dubbed as the yoga balls, Swiss balls, balance balls, exercise balls. In the club world of fitness clubs, these vibrant bouncy balls are touted as ‘stability balls’.

Despite the awkward appearance of these new fitness spheres, the durability can be found in the vinyl exterior. These new balls are featuring a critical role in fitness programs across healthy clubs across the nation. From weight training, Pilate’s classes, in aerobics classes in personal training session, stability balls (exercise balls) are gleaning their stretching, strenuous and relaxation capabilities for all fitness programs.

It’s almost an oxymoron, how these ‘stability balls’/balance balls are referred to as stable and balance. With the instability of these rounded workout devices, the exercise possibilities are almost unlimited. Swiss balls are chronicled back to the 1960s by physical therapists, Pilates. Originally, the balls were used to rehabilitate patients with muscular, neurological or mechanical disorders.

During the late 1980s, exercise balls made a debut amongst professional athletes and elite personal trainers. It was not until the 1990s that these balance balls were introduced to the marketplace when fitness coaches discovered the numerous exercise possibilities.

Today, the popularity of exercise balls is sparking the desire to exercise. The versatility of stability balls is impelling a newfound love for fitness. To demonstrate the appeal of balance balls, market research study was conducts. The survey findings showed that fitness clubs across America scaled the use of exercise balls from 35 percent (in 1998) to a colossal 87 percent in 2005.

Not to mention stability balls are not limited to health clubs across America. They are available at grocery stores, Wal-Mart and fitness stores.
